Congratulations to Lea-Sophie LaChance Room 206 Student of the Week!

 

Dear Parents,

The Field Trip for today was postponed. I will keep you posted when it will be rescheduled. There is no Book Log due for tonight. Students should work on their book reports due October 31, 2014.  Students have the option to complete an oral book report dressed as the main character for 100 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS!!!! Please sign student permission form (distributed last week)

Weekly Objectives 

Math:  Students will solve number stories. They will use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. Fourth graders will review strategies for solving word problems.

Social Studies: Fourth graders will work with current events so that we can be aware of the world around us and how those events can affect our lives. Students will read and understand grade-level-appropriate material from “Time For Kids” http://www.timeforkids.com/ . They draw upon a variety of comprehension strategies as needed (e.g., generating and responding to essential questions, making predictions, comparing information from several sources).

Social Studies EXTRA CREDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Students will be allowed to choose up to two articles from the TFK website and answer the following questions:

Answer in S.S. Notebooks (Label Extra Credit)

  1. What information did you already know about the topic before reading the passage? How did you learn this information?
  2. Tell 3 facts you learned from reading the passage.
  3. Pretend you have to teach what you learned from reading this passage to a new student. What will you tell about the topic?
  4. Choose a color to describe the topic. Tell why you chose it.

Science- Students will continue studying the process of proposing and testing hypothesis (Scientific Method).  Students will research possible Science Project ideas for the classroom science fair.  Fourth graders will continue to discuss experiments that are of interest to them in preparation for our classroom science fair in December. Literacy: Fourth Graders will identify structural features of Informational Text. They will identify structural patterns found in informational text (e.g., compare and contrast, cause and effect,) to strengthen comprehension

Writing: Topic: “Why are We Thankful”. Students will begin outlining multiple-paragraph compositions (DRAFT):

  1. Provide an introductory paragraph.
  2. Establish and support a central idea with a topic sentence at or near the beginning of the first paragraph.
  3. Include supporting paragraphs with simple facts, details, and explanations.
  4. Conclude with a paragraph that summarizes the points.
  5. Use correct indention.

Week 6 Student of the Week: Congrats to Imani Bragg for being student of the week!

Parents,

Happy Monday!  Students are not studying for their weekly timed math facts test. Therefore, students are required to write times tables 3 times each (if they passed last weeks test) 5 times if they failed  every night this week. Please make certain your child has their own pair of scissors and ruler. Please sign and return all field trip forms as soon as possible. If you would like to chaperone please contact me via email mrtoney@cps.edu . After school programs start this week.

Weekly Objectives

Math- This week in Math students will continue working on various strategies for solving multiplication facts. Please  continue to practice multiplication facts with your children. All Students this week are required to write their times tables fact 3 times each nightly.  Those facts are due the very next day, not Friday (example: 3X0=0 to 3X12=36). Students will be notified on Monday which facts they need to work on.If you need clarity please send me an email.

Literacy- This week in Language Arts we will be reading realistic fiction. This week for homework, read “Once Upon A Cool Motorcycle Dude””. Students will be continue reading their novels for small group. This week students will recognize compare and contrast relationships in text. Our Classroom Novel is “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” by Judy Blume. Please dialogue with your fourth grader about  what they are reading. Ask them about the character traits of the main characters (protagonists) in the story. What evidence in the text supports why they feel a character has that trait?

Social Studies: While reading informational text, students will identify main idea and supporting details as well as using context clues to identify any unfamiliar words.
Writing– This week in Writer’s Workshop we continue working on our personal narrative stories.

Progress Reports and NWEA fall score were issued to the students last Friday. Please sign and have your fourth grader return their progress reports.

Weekly Objectives

Math- This week in Math we will begin Unit 3. The Unit 2 exam will be on Wednesday. On the test students have an option on using the Trade First Method vs. Partial Difference to solve 3 digit subtraction problems. We will begin working on strategies for solving multiplication facts. Please practice multiplication facts with your children. Many of the students are not firm on the facts and need a lot of practice. Students are not studying their facts nightly. Therefore, if  a student did not pass last weeks test the are required to write their math facts 3 times each nightly. Those facts are due the very next day, not Friday (example: 3X0=0 to 3X12=36). Students will be notified on Tuesday which facts they need to work on.
